Trunk or Treat…

I did in fact show The Bee the two costume choices–again–right before launch time, and she most very definitely this time signed “don’t like” when I showed her the bee…so she was the blue-winged-dark-fairy-butterfly last night for her first Halloween:

Dark Fairy

Blue Butterfly

In the ranching community where we live, there is no going door-to-door. Doors exist down dark dirt driveways, sometimes meandering a mile or more into the hills and canyons. Too weird. Too scary. Too exhausting. So, alternatively, the town holds what’s known as a “trunk or treat”…everyone gathers in the primary school parking lot at five o’clock and the kids go round in a big circle, from car trunk to car trunk, gathering candy from the adults, who hang out in lawn chairs or on the backs of their pick-ups…

Trunk or Treat

After the trunk or treat, we took The Bee into town and went trick-or-treating in our old neighborhood, which used to be quite lively but was rather sedate this year…checking in with some former neighbors was nice…The Bee looked like this upon reaching our driveway once again:

  1. Oh, bless her wee heart. I love her choice of the butterfly wings - such pretty colors and great makeup opportunity.

  2. Oh lord - that child is beyond adorable. Great mysterious and magical makeup, too! I see that R had a nose - what did you wear?

  3. Our neighborhood has hills and many steps UP and DOWN to the front doors (all houses are either above or below street level). Wore out #2 after 1 hour. #1 was still pulling me with a full head of steam. Gotta get more Kit-Kat bars!

  7. In the photo of her with her hands on her knees, I can sense the giddy excitement of my little sisters in past Halloweens. So precious.

  9. What a good idea. I live in a subdivision but its one without sidewalks and has some long driveways and dark areas. We didn’t get that many trick or treaters either. The Bee looked beautiful as a butterfly.

  11. I love her costume! Great job. I bought a great chicken costume from Walgreens that looked soo great on our wee one. Alas, she hated it. I even bought her a fake egg to carry around with it. The chicken or the egg? Get it? Anyhoo….maybe next year. We stayed home and handed out candy. Thor wondered why she couldn’t have any candy but we were handing it out to any and all children that knocked on the door. S’up wit dat?!

  12. Oh, she’s too cute! I’m glad she had a great time!

I grew up in the rural PNW and my parents drove us from house to house. There were no neighborhoods there either. And usually people were out driving their kids around, so left big baskets of candy on the front door on the honor system.

  14. Love the sparkles! And she seems to be having so much fun!

I’m in the city, but we had one trick or treater who was tailgating on his parents pickup. They drove slow and stopped at any likely house for him to jump off, run to the door and back! We get a lot of people who come down from the mountains, since we are in the outer corner of the city near the highway, so I’m guessing this was one of those (it was a huge dodge diesel-not a city truck).

  17. Congratulations on a successful Toddler Halloween! Very tricky to pull off I’ve heard. The butterfly was adorable!

  18. Aha! I KNEW the butterfly RULED! What a total complete utter industrial-grade cutie. So glad she enjoyed her first Halloween.

Interestingly enough, the Peeper was completely OK with his little sister wearing “The Bug”, which must mean he’s over it (we’d never have got it off him if he wasn’t). He was a great dinosaur. Poor guy - he got frightened by the haunted house over on Amherst & Portsmouth and wouldn’t go near any “scary” decorated houses after that. Which, as I patiently explained, tuled out, like, 70% of ALL houses. But he got enough Kit-Kats to keep him buzzing for the evening. Good times.
